Architecture Is....

Architecture is the physical measure of time, history, and culture. It is constantly transforming to human needs and therefore has no definitive state. It is a spatial condition one experiences through the built environment through various scales. It is a story. It is selfish. It is the manifestation of one's ideas in a physical reality. It can manipulate the surrounding context and the state in which a city exists as a whole.

  1. It's interesting you want to do your thesis in the Middle East, where so much history and culture has been glossed over by rapid development of iconic buildings with no regard to their context. With this definition in mind, what is the state of cities in the UAE or Qatar? Do they function like a single element where each piece reacts to those around it, or are they a series of isolated events that function independently and without notice of what's around it? I guess more importantly, what position does your thesis take and how does it either build on or challenge the types of architecture and cities there today?

  2. In response to your comment, I think the city development (in terms of developing independently or not) vary according to city. I would say that each city is in competition with one another, how can they each define their self uniquely? Dubai is well known for its tourists (comprising 80% of the population) and is known (or was) for its rapid development in skyscrapers and new outlandish experiments. Yet cities like Abu Dhabi and Doha are trying to develop on something more defined than money, they focus more on culture and consider the phenomenal growth more wisely.
